The trio of Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny de Vito are back again to get into the waters of Indiana Jones with exciting archaeological adventures. Any form of story can only be found with a very strong magnifying glass, because in fact the characters do little more than end up in bizarre situations and brighten them up in turn with witty one-liners. And it works... The film looks nice and remains very entertaining with the grandiose spectacle. Less attractive is how caricatured (to the point of being racist) both the Arab world and dark Africa are portrayed. It gets too much at the end with an outrageous pro-American sneer at Islamic Sunnis and some sort of moronic glorification of Sufism. The last shot with Danny de Vito yelling ''Suffi rules!'' is outrageous stupidity. But is it really that bad? Well, these kinds of adventure films derive part of their charm from taking cultural customs out of context and using them for their own story.

The sequel to Romancing The Stone, and just like the same title a piece of youth sentiment as far as the old familiar Saturday night movie is concerned. And as with Romancing The Stone, curiosity overcame fears of an outdated film.

Just-Joan, Jack, Ralph...and something precious to be hunted, it's not much different from Romancing The Stone. The film is fast and catchy, and soon the problems start to spiral out of control for the couple. The plus point of this film is the more appealing bad guy Omar, who I thought was Omar Sharif. The scene with the F-16 is almost iconic and yes ... anyone who hears Billy Ocean with The Going Get's Tough should automatically think of this film. I certainly do...

And so The Jewel Of The Nile is quite a nice film and in my opinion no less than its predecessor. Not so much a minus as a feature of an 80's film are all the ingredients that guarantee all genres from which the film gets its share. Action, romance, humor, adventure, stereotypes, crazy characters and gore, all in an easy-to-grasp style. It's no longer of this time, but it's entertaining nonetheless.
