Special case.

Never seen the original series, but don't think much has survived in terms of atmosphere. Rather the setup and the characters, but the work of the Wachowskis here is too familiar to me to be a straightforward adaptation.

The colors are definitely getting used to in the beginning. A bit kitsch, often also somewhat cheap, but a certain style retention is noticeable throughout the film. I don't think the two saw this as a serious technical marvel, but as a clearly stylized film.

I didn't really like it, except for the races. Very reminiscent of Running Man and Redline of course, although they probably got their mustard from the same source. Very caricatured and cartoonesque, but certainly charming.

Acting is a bit annoying, especially the main characters never come out well. The bit parts (like a Goodman) are better than the guy with his monkey. You clearly recognize the anime influence in it, but the conversion to Hollywood is not at all good.

The story is also simple, not bad but there could have been a little more action. Now too much time is spent on a plot that doesn't interest you.

When it goes forward, this is pretty fun movie fodder, the Wachowskis clearly knew what they were doing. It is also clear that it is not for everyone, but that is more of a strength than a shortcoming for a blockbuster like this.

“Racing hasn't changed, and it never will.”

Nice movie. I thought the special effects looked a bit cheap, and the story itself is mediocre and a bit childish at times. But the racing scenes are entertaining, and with an actor like John Goodman, you also make sure there's some humor and lightheartedness in the film. Because sometimes Speed Racer is also very serious, and especially Matthew Fox approaches the material as if he were playing in an Oscar nominated art house film. Given the ridiculous twist at the end, that's understandable, but even then it's more laughable than emotional.
