Cute Yau.

Typical Hong Kong action film that you don't come across too often these days. Usually the directors who made these types of films went to China and there these types of films are slightly different in terms of atmosphere and execution.

But of course Yau doesn't care about that, that man just does what he likes as always. So he sets out with Andy Lau to make a smooth action thriller. One with an honorable worker ant from the demining service, which gives the film its own face. You don't see that often in Hong Kong movies.

Wen Jiang is a cool bad guy, Andy Lau the ultimate good guy. And the end a typical Yau piece, a rarity in Hong Kong. The tension is sufficiently present, Yau has sufficient budget and despite the playing time of 120 minutes it never gets boring.

It is not high-quality cinema (of course), but very smooth and finely executed entertainment. Nice to see that Yau just keeps doing his thing, meanwhile there is another horror work from 2017 ready. Fine director anyway, someone you can almost blindly count on.

3.5*

This confrontation between an altruistic bomb expert and the ruthless leader of a terrorist group, who still has a score to settle, did not warm or cold to me. The film is mainly action-oriented and is extremely brief in terms of backgrounds or motives. I don't know if Andy Lau fans will be happy about this. Only recommended for fans of spectacular action movies.

Fine combination of action, thriller and disaster film with Andy Lau as a bomb expert who, after a half-successful undercover mission, has to deal with the extensive consequences a year later. Consequences that subsequently have far-reaching and threatening consequences for the city of Hong Kong.

Shock Wave (Chak dan juen ga) from 2017 was already the 68th film by director Herman Yau (now the counter is at 79) and despite the fact that the man maintains an almost hellish pace, he usually delivers decent quality.

There was apparently a considerable budget available for this film, the images are generally very beautiful and the action scenes and various explosions are also very impressive. The story is not too special, but it does have some quite original and strong twists and turns.

I wasn't that impressed with protagonist Andy Lau this time, I've seen him in better shape (for example in Infernal Affairs and Detective Dee). This in contrast to Jiang Wu (as gang leader) and Philip Keung (as police inspector), who both deliver an excellent performance here. Keung also won a Hong Kong Award for best supporting actor for his acting.

Shock Wave is certainly not a masterpiece or anything, but it is a very entertaining and successful film that I liked a lot better than most of its American counterparts. A successful sequel came in 2020.
