Already 27 years old and now released on 4K. Also with this transfer I can say slightly better than the 2K version, but certainly no steps forward.

The movie is one of Tom Clancy's best books and I still really like it. The technology is very outdated when I look at the PCs and the satellites. What a difference with the year 2019. But that's how it was then. Patriots Games is well built and has a nice tension with a nice James Bond ending. Bit of Cape Fear at the end. Of course, the end with that dinner is rather naive. They knew there was a traitor somewhere, so don't sit there anyway, but good for the film of course. As far as the IRA is concerned, this film has little to do. It eventually becomes a personal feud between the brother of the slain brother and the one who fatally shot him. In it, the Sean Bean seems to have gone too far in his mission for the IRA. This is what makes it all fun in Patriot Games. Not an absolute high flyer in 2019, but still good enough for 2 hours of entertainment. We just don't know if it's a boy or a girl

Movie 4.0

Image 3.5 (4K)

Sound 3.5

A decent but otherwise not special thriller and also the first Jack Ryan film adaptation. Or was Hunt for Red October rather…?

The film starts with a very nice image of Ryan who accidentally ends up in the attack. This continues with the necessary commotion between different IRA factions and more extreme branches which turns into a nice bit of espionage and counter-espionage. Meanwhile, Jack and his family must be mindful and confront possible attacks. Very nice is the attempt on Jack with the slowly building tension and paranoia. Also very nice is the decoy with two other vans during transport.

Less is the image that slightly arises that half the espionage and secret service with satellites and all is looking for Jack's opponent. Just as well that IRA member Bean is possessed by Ryan and it just as well seems that half the IRA is committed to getting Jack. Now they may come up with their own agenda in the end, again the royal family, but the fact that Bean wouldn't play along and eventually go overboard was predictable and could have been avoided if they had been a little more professional. I find the equipment very expensive and high tech for a rogue IRA splinter cell. In addition, I am surprised that the royal family is not better guarded in the beginning, while apparently it was a turbulent time with the IRA in England.

Horner's soundtrack is beautiful, by the way, a bit of Clannad through it, perhaps the best thing about the whole film. The actors are all fairly on autopilot and I always distrusted the characters Bean played in his career after seeing this film. Furthermore, Patriot Games is far from a high flyer and perhaps best described as dated, but it is still a pretty acceptable film.

A film that doesn't do much wrong, but it doesn't really rise above average either. What you're left with is a good, average film. Harrison Ford is good as the CIA agent Jack Ryan (albeit a little uninspired or bored at times), and his co-founder Sean Bean is also on a roll as the psychopathic terrorist. Some small supporting roles are also filled by very big names, so there is nothing to criticize about the cast. The first hour as a whole is actually quite good. A small number of action scenes, and for the rest a nice build-up of the story. However, from the attack on Jack Ryan's family, Patriot Games falls completely silent. Only at the end with the robbery on the house and the boat chase, meanwhile about three quarters of an hour later, the whole thing returns and the film ends quite well. All in all, I'd give it a 3*. The film itself is well put together and the acting is good, but the tempo sometimes drops below the lowest point and there is not much tension or action.
