When this movie came out I was in high school and everyone was talking about it, and it was really cool if you played the game on your Pentium II too.

The film itself is well put together and Willie, who more or less plays the clown, gets away with it well. You can clearly see how dated the film actually is or better set how quickly time flies.

The exploding planes for example looks really fake but before that time it was real life on your CRT tube with 4:3 scaling.

I think some scenes are a bit unnecessary, the film could have been shorter, the worst is in that tunnel with the dog.. Oh and at the end.. I thought the universe is vacuum and that there should be an implosion earlier, maaje that makes the film is less spectacular.

Nice to have seen again and I'm going to see part 2 in the cinema.

In my memory, Independence Day was one of those typical explosions, with just a lot of shooting and banging. But especially the first act of the film managed to pleasantly surprise me; it's all more about a series of cartoonish characters, all of them quite fun to watch. It also helps that they have mentioned some charismatic and likeable actors. The result is a fun first half hour with some tension, some nice interactions and here and there an explosion. But along the way, Independence Day becomes more and more stupid nonsense and a lot of patriotic nonsense, which no doubt gets many Americans very excited. Especially when David Arnold's music is turned up as loud as the American flag flutters in the wind. At times like these, it's nice when a cigar-smoking Will Smith slaps an alien in the face or has a chat with nerve sinew Jeff Goldblum. Sometimes the film is nice and light, but at other times they seem to take the stupid story a bit too seriously. If that wink had been more present and thirty minutes had been cut from the film, Independence Day would have been a very successful film. Now it's nothing more than a good popcorn movie at times, with a great first act in particular. Had I been American, I would undoubtedly have thought differently.

3 stars.

windfall.

It must have been almost 20 years since I saw this as a kid. That was cool at the time: aliens, Will Smith with a lot of 'funny' one-liners, a mad scientist, .. Independence Day has it all and is, in my opinion, one of the (American) spectacle films of its time. In addition, more than 25 years later, it is still not that bad. The film is not hopelessly overtaken by time.

And that is the biggest windfall. Provided that you as a viewer know that you are watching a typical American spectacle film. Because Roland Emmerich goes all the way in blowing up not only cities, but also patriotism. The highlight of this is of course the president who will join the fight himself, regardless of whether he orphans his child or not.

In the end I can have it. You know you're watching a movie like that. The spectacle is still there - even if it depends from shot to shot whether the CGI is not that bad or not. The threat of the aliens - nice ship by the way - is immediately present and one does not waste a minute of the already hefty playing time to fly into it. It's not too bad for me that all those trivial sidesteps and characters still fit well into the whole. The movie doesn't start to drag anywhere. Smith is the right man for this role, but I thought he had a bigger role. All rolls are almost equal, that was different in my memory.

More than decent entertainment. Mind at zero, and watching a lot of nonsense full of spectacle: it can be fun.
