Yuen may not be the best director in the world, but when it comes to action he knows what to do.

This movie is really moving quickly towards the end. The entire story is compacted as best as possible so that the action scenes get enough space. Any time left is filled with hectic comedy.

Quite a big role for Hark who, although not a very good actor, fits perfectly in a neurotic HK film like this. Nice cameo from Sammo Hung too.

Furthermore, very action-packed and hyperactive action scenes, especially the last one, gives the film extra shine. Very well captured action, nice long scene with a strong rush feeling. In 1985 people generally did things more clumsily.

Yuen always works with actors who can deliver a few heavy punches without strings and that always results in better scenes in the end. Very nice choreography and rather exaggerated editing/camera angles still make the action scenes a very nice attraction for a film like this.

You have to take the HK silliness into account, but even that is very touching and neurotic enough to make the entire film race by.

Last action scene gives me a 3.5*. Yuen is often guaranteed fun.

In terms of action, this film is good. Very good in fact, because the action scenes look slick and spectacular. But the problem with this film (and many other Hong Kong films from the late '80s and early '90s), is the humor that you have to love.

Normally I can't help but smile when I see another actor acting extremely busy and irritating, but this made me laugh quite a bit.

Very nice movie, with a fantastic ending.

3.5*

Hong Kong action film from 1985, and one of the first in that period with two female leads (Michelle Yeoh & Cynthia Rothrock) and therefore retroactively included in the In the Line of Duty (II) series. also known as the 'Girls with Guns' genre.

And although Yes Madam (Huang Jia Shi Jie) is an entertaining film with a number of strong action scenes (especially the final battle was very worthwhile), something that director Corey Yuen always guarantees, I found this one a lot less than, for example, In the Line of Duty 4 (1989) which I saw a few weeks earlier.

This is partly due to the parts in Yes Madam where the clumsy criminal duo Strepsil & Asprin (played by John Shum and Mang Hoi respectively, the latter even won a Hong Kong Award for Best Supporting Actor for his part) make an appearance. Together with their companion Panadol (played by Tsui Hark, who is mainly known as a director), they provide the comic side of the film. And that with a strange Asian humor that I didn't always find successful (although sometimes I couldn't suppress a smile) and which takes the pace out of the film a bit. In any case, there were quite a few characters that were not to be taken seriously in Yes Madam, with the standout being Chung Fat as Big Mustache, one of the main villain's henchmen who looked hilarious with his glued-on eyebrows. By the way, I thought James Tien as Henry Tin, the aforementioned main villain, was convincing, and he couldn't help but smile like that.

All in all, that makes Yes Madam not a really good film, but a very nice and entertaining one. And that is also worth a lot.
