Incredibly beautiful movie. It is indeed not your standard western. It is not only set in the USA, but also in the Arab countries. That gave a bit of variety to the story. The film was captivating from start to finish. The role of Frank Hopkins, as the mannered and laid-back cowboy, is a perfect fit for Mortensen. But his partner, Hidalgo, is also very good. You really feel a strong bond between the two. The film has its quiet moments, where you can enjoy the beautiful setting. But there is also plenty of action. So something for everyone.

A big 4.0*

This film had everything to conjure up something beautiful for the viewer... but (and I really tried) it failed to captivate me, let alone convince me.

It turned out to be a succession of predictability and that made it a very boring film. Even the actions, however spectacularly attempted, were dull.

As a protagonist - perhaps they were mistaken - you should be able to bring much more than Viggo Mortensen has been able to do; to look inscrutable and to put on a soft, hoarse voice; it was a show... well... Clint Eastwood blows everyone away with that, me included, but apparently he's a phenomenon.

A 1.5 for the effort.

Less Lawrence of Arabia than Indiana Jones (how Hopkins there runs over the battlements with bullets whistling around his ears on all sides!), but when a feel good family film leaves such a satisfied glow on me as a viewer, that is also worth something. Mortensen is excellent in his role, not an untouchable demigod like some kind of Aragorn-lite but really a human being with weaknesses and willpower. Nice (but unfortunately too short) mini role from Malcolm McDowell, and JK Simmons is perfect for his role as Buffalo Bill!
