Its predecessor was already strong, this sequel is actually just as great. One of the nicer Marvel films that I wish they could make more of.

This time, the Guardians suddenly get a visit from Peter's father. The starting signal for a new adventure full of space violence and dry humour. It is again a lot of fun with the main cast that are perfectly attuned to each other. Slightly more jokes than in the first part, easy scoring sometimes, but I had to laugh regularly. More than with many weak full-blooded comedies that are pooped out today, in any case. Drax in particular is hilarious with his too honest reactions. Baby Groot is cute, Peter has charisma and every scene with Rocket is worth watching. Even Yondu and Nebula get a bigger stage and that also works out well. Not that the story is always equally fascinating, the moral is sometimes a bit too thick on top.

The movie looks fantastic again at times, especially the CGI work of Ego's planet. But the action also brings you on the edge of your seat, although it will sometimes feel a bit too chaotic. Then it is sometimes difficult to comprehend what is happening now. In addition, a number of slow scenes sometimes slow down a bit. Great soundtrack again which gives the film that light-hearted taste.

That's why I really liked the ending, which was actually quite moving. Superb ode to Yondu, which I already had sympathy for. Nice cameos also from Michelle Yeoh and Ving Rhames. The movie could have been a little shorter, but overall I really enjoyed it. And the credits show we're not done yet, thankfully.

GotG 2. A sequel that is clearly too long. The team is being taken apart and you notice that clearly. Everything is missing, the whole messy and chaotic. Despite that, Kurt Russell is a decent antagonist. It's a pity that there is so much focus on spectacle and that got boring very quickly for me. There are a few funny jokes, but in general I found this one to be less humorous than the previous one (which I saw last week). I also liked the ending of the first movie. This sequel is simply a succession of what makes the first so popular, only it focuses less on what I liked about the first, namely the humor, the soundtrack and the bonding between the characters. This has now all been rolled back to 50% of that level. Previous was at 4* this one goes to 2*. Firm but fair.

Very skinny.

It is actually striking that Marvel has difficulty in putting down a decent bad guy. Kurt Russell can't change that much either, although that's not a surprise. He never accomplished much, but still. The bad guys are usually the funniest characters in superhero movies, but they're always such salt bags in those Marvel movies.

Furthermore, another story about someone who wants to turn the whole universe upside down, but is stopped by some individuals with super powers. Of course with united forces, because that is the common thread through all these films. One can't make the storylines bigger for a while, the result is that those epic problems start to get pretty boring in the meantime. Because who still doubts the outcome?

Visually it is a bit more fun than most Marvel films, although it remains with designs. In terms of camera work and editing it is all very mediocre, the CG itself is not immediately amazing. The soundtrack is a weak point, but that was to be expected. A bit of leaning on old hits is so and that's one of the selling points of this film.

The humor is also of a moderate level, only Drax is occasionally a bit funny. Rocket, Groot and whatnot are especially annoying. It's actually a good thing that Gunn is no longer allowed to work on part 3, although I wonder if his brain isn't one big Marvel by now and whether we can expect much more from him. Once a talented director, now an identityless sparrow.

Just like this movie. No matter how hard they try to bring variety to the Marvel universe, in the end with most movies I still feel like I've been watching the same nonsense. That's what happens when you don't let directors be directors. An 80s hit and some brighter colors don't do much.

1.5*
