"Prepare to be entertained."

Decades have passed since Maximus gave his life as a gladiator in the Colosseum to take revenge on the emperor. Lucius, Lucilla's now adult son, was sent away by his mother as a child to Numidia to grow up just outside the reach of the Roman Empire. He never quite understood why. And as he grew stronger, his resentment towards her increased.

As expected, the first film remains much better.

But I certainly wasn't bored.

The big difference between both films:

1st: Very strong cast with a rock solid story.

2nd: Good cast but made purely for sensation.

Worth seeing in the cinema, but I'll remain loyal to the first film.

While watching I mainly wondered why this film had to come. The structure, thematics, different characters: all that is fairly similar to part 1. Nothing in this film justifies a second part.
Now I didn't think part 1 was a masterpiece but it was certainly a decent film and also with a certain rewatch value. But part 2 has a lot less of all that. The leading role this time is for Mescal who walks around a bit colorless and the film races from set piece to set piece and the script is full and messy so that Mescal doesn't really get the chance to build his character. His anger that is in him is not credible for a moment. Compare that to Crowe so many years ago: you understood him. Then Pascal and especially Washington (who plays with clear pleasure and steals every scene) do a lot better.

Furthermore, it all looks quite nice, but that is mainly budget. Take that first scene with the attack on that city. There is some blood in it, but compare it to the landing in Saving Private Ryan: that intensity is not reached here anywhere. I constantly had the feeling of watching a polished version of reality with all the clichés that come with it (those two emperors, for example) and just a bit too much over the top. And oh well, the pacing is not bad, which makes those 150 minutes quite passable, but to say that the film is good? 2.5*.

Absolute disgrace. An accumulation of craziness and fairly mediocre action scenes with sometimes bad CGI (monkey fight.... At times there is a kind of comic element that seems rather out of place.
Plot follows on very forcefully from the first part, including some cheap flashbacks.
Also noticeable is the mediocre soundtrack, while the epic soundtrack of the first part should have provided enough inspiration.
Denzel makes the film somewhat bearable.
The movie poster is indeed really terribly cheap.

Finally, I would like to ask any aging film director to leave old work alone if it doesn't add anything.
