Still an amusing video from Wheatley. A nod to Resevoir Dogs indeed, and little plot.

Yes, you just have to be patient. I didn't know what 1978 contributed to this. Were it not that the year is not mentioned at the beginning. Nice roles and extras as I mentioned. Sam Riley as that clumsy Stevo, that South African arms dealer, a tough chick, that cranky Ord, that hipster type Vernon and that guy who has a bone to pick with Stevo because he injured his niece in a drunken stupor... as side issue. Two snipers and then an hour-long shooting, accompanied by many fun one-liners and tricks, which sometimes get pretty bloody. The potential was there, in my opinion, and the film was not boring at all.

I think you could also consider this a nod to the gangster movies. It's not Hollywood either.

I don't give very low marks easily, but I have to make an exception here. Haven't seen such a meaningless, monotonous fluff film in ages. Despite the not too long playing time, there is still quite a bit to get through. Nothing really happens. Small wafer-thin introduction and then it's about an hour of shooting anything that moves. Every now and then a “cocksucker” is called to each other for a change. The humor is not funny and there is nothing original about the whole film. On top of that, everything comes across as forced. Scorsese must have received a very big check to put his name on this nonsense. The only bright spot is the always beautiful Brie Larson. Waste of time. Not recommended.

Welcome.

Wheatley clearly has talent, but it doesn't always work out well. Sometimes he gloats a bit, and while that's still better than a lot of directors who just don't give a shit, it's also a shame that Wheatley doesn't let his talent come to full bloom.

Not that Free Fire has become that film, it is in itself a fairly simple snack, but one made with a lot of fun and love. And I felt like doing that again at Wheatley. Away from all the hassle, just a simple movie where he can go wild.

And he does. It starts off a bit boring, with a typical arms deal and some shady characters. But when the fight starts, a brilliant stand-off unfolds where no one belongs together anymore and the dolls are slaughtered one by one, although this usually takes several stages before they finally fall down.

Action and crime, but above all some black humor. With actors like Murphy and Copley that is also quite good, supplemented with some nice British charm (Michael Smiley). This is very entertaining, maybe a little more could have been done with the location/cinematography, but otherwise a very nice snack.

3.5*
