This is a very fat movie full of misery and rottenness. But 1 bright spot and that is a father-daughter relationship that never really existed. A film about a man who is counting down his days until death. Until he gets another target. And then the flame goes into the pan. Gibson is still there.

The number of great scripts Mr Gibson gets is probably very limited.
this is a role written on his body, with his now lived-in face.
The last 3 A 4 films have all just not become his deserved comeback, don't fear this, while the man has earned his stripes.
This is nice action / drama that looks nice .
And with a moral that whole anti-Nazi part was not a coincidence I assume
And an ending that you can see coming for miles. (action movies often get away with that)
But it's not really that captivating.
Fair enough , waiting for the amazing comeback that will score ( I hope ) .

From the director of Mesrine comes this no-brainer with old hand Mel Gibson. What is he playing? That's right, an ex-con who has a forgotten daughter... until the moment that daughter calls him and needs him badly.

This daughter Lydia had an affair with a much older drug runner, but this time refused to do anything for him. Conscience got in the way. That's how you find your way to your father... who lives in a remote trailer park and alcohol consumption is the rule rather than the exception. Inevitably, she won't be safe there for long, and Father John will be drawn into it too...and must take action.

This does result in a film with a plot as thin as tissue paper, but which nevertheless manages to captivate from start to finish like an old-fashioned action lick. The one-liners, the acting, Lydia herself ( ), the bad guys, the sandy location and also the action scenes all come out well. In fact, Mel Gibson occasionally wants to pay tribute to his older films here. (That double-barreled gun... Mad Max?)

William H Macy also had a nice contribution.

Yes, this did appeal to me. No nonsense action without taking too long.

3.5*
