Wonderfully over-the-top and clearly made with fun film. Carpenter once again succeeds in making a fun and original film with a limited budget.

He has managed to use Chinese mythology well to get things done with a number of monsters, a person who can float through walls and a wizard who reminded me strongly of Raiden from the Mortal Kombat games.

I can appreciate all that craziness with a good amount of one-liners from Russell.

I am a fan of Carpenter's style of film making and this one also went very well.

Pfft.

Quite busy and childish action movie, from which I expected something more. Admittedly: they have succeeded magnificently in going over-the-top effectively. Kurt Russell, although I don't really think that's a cool actor, does his best as a sweaty macho and Kim Catrall in her good years is also eye candy. The ingredients are there, but the end result is not there. The fun is limited. There are, in my opinion, too many ignorant figures for that. The film is now quite dated, although the test of time would have been milder if more had been done with the monster designs.

Shut up, mr. Burton! You are not brought upon this world to get it!

This week, James Hong is in the news with finally getting his star on the walk of fame. A good reason to see a few films in which he plays. This one for example. Perhaps not the best choice in retrospect, because despite the fact that he plays a major role in the narrative, he is rarely seen - and even then under a thick layer of grime.

Nevertheless, still very nice, a throwback to the 80s and a parody of just about all films from the adventure, Asia, and fairytale genre - and also a nod to Carpenter's own Escape films. With, as it should be for these kinds of films, a lot of beautiful quotes - maybe a bit bland when you read them, but in the film it works for me. Just like the soundtrack and the wacky hats.
