A sheepdog, bible, flag and of course 9/11. I'll leave the controversy for what it is, because otherwise it's not much. Much more than a collection of scenes in which it is pontifically shown how the person stands cannot be made of this. Sienna Miller has the thankless job of playing the bitchy girl who gets promoted to girlfriend, wife and mother, but she doesn't have much flesh and blood. Everything about the script, everything about pushing her husband in one direction.

So Chris Kyle, who, judging by the elongated scenes with a boy before the loop, has a hard time there. In the meantime, he protects and avenges his comrades, while at the moment he calls supreme with the home front. Nevertheless, the firefight in the sandstorm is not bad. It's a pity that the sniper on the other side is a bit too reminiscent of a crook from a cool action movie. No idea what Eastwood wanted with this, it seems like a bit of everything and then it's usually not much. Likewise here.

Exhaustingly fragmentary. Clint Eastwood had a side full of themes and subjects that he wanted to address with this one-sided film that at its core is mainly laughable pro-army propaganda and only second (dull, gray) cinema. It is a listing of events roughly cut together. I was really shocked; it's a battlefield of hasty, truncated scenes. You don't get a moment to settle down because you as a viewer are constantly being thrown back and forth. For example, a film that deals with many similar themes about returning from a war zone and that better temporizes it in the editing is Thank You for Your Service (2017) . American Sniper tries to be much more than that and that ultimately results in a lot of nothing. Autopilot shit.

A strong film, made from an American point of view. In my opinion, this is what makes it a strong film. The typical American view of the military, military, weapons and war is very much visible in this film. This is precisely what makes the film interesting for me, because the flip side of it is also shown very realistically. Certain scenes in the film I found less realistic (when the whole crew is quietly eating a meal with the man with the guns under the rug, for example), and the start of the film with Kyle found its cowboy period I less strong. Also the clumsiness in his thinking and statements sometimes makes it difficult for some people to show sympathy for him, but in the last half hour there is a nice character development that straightens this out. Other parts of the film, such as the scenes with the drill, both on mission and in the USA, I think are very strong because they give a realistic picture of the real terrorism and the PTSD that some people suffer from their career choice.

American Sniper is certainly one of the better war films and shows very nicely what the consequences are of a fierce mission on a soldier and his environment. It's close to 4 stars for me. The first half hour, Chris's clumsiness and the sometimes not so realistic parts in the missions are in my opinion the main negatives. All in all, a worthy tribute to Chris Kyle, with a very strong last half hour.
