The second season of The Last of Us will commence filming in February.
The first season, based on the hugely popular video game of the same name, received universal critical acclaim and is recognised as one of the best video game adaptations ever made.
Praise was reserved for the writing and the performances of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie.
Showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed to Variety that production will begin on season two just after the turn of the year. The second season will be based on The Last of Us: Part II game.
There is a major role that needs cast before season two and that is Abby who, as fans of the game will know, turns into a primary villain in the franchise.
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Dever has been targeted for the role.
"Back in August, The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin told the L.A. Times that he had found an actress to play Abby Anderson in Season 2. To that end, I hear that Kaitlyn Dever is in talks to tackle the role," Sneider wrote on InSneider.com.
"Should a deal make, Dever would join Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in Season 2, which is expected to premiere on HBO in 2025. In the game, Abby is positioned as a rival to Ramsey’s Ellie — a role that Dever herself was once eyed for, having done a table read as that character.
"Dever also happens to be one of the 71 people Mazin currently follows on Instagram."
What has Kaitlyn Dever been in?
Dever recently received rave reviews for her performance in sci-fi horror No One Will Save You, in which she plays a young woman stalked by an otherworldly being in her home.
Her other notable credits include Booksmart, Unbelievable, Last Man Standing and Dopesick.
Sneider notes that Dever does not have any upcoming projects officially pencilled in, which opens up her schedule to potentially play Abby in The Last of Us.
