'Sylvia (Chastain) is a social worker who leads a simple and structured life. This is blown open when Saul (Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.'
Memory has already received plenty of acclaim from critics as it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival where it competed with the prestigious Golden Lion Award. Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance.
A selection of the reviews so far:
"This is an absorbing story, acted with superlative delicacy and maturity by Chastain and Sarsgaard." - Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian.
"Chastain and Sarsgaard rise to the challenge of these complex roles. In particular, Sarsgaard finds truth in a gentle man who is constantly forced to reassess his situation and relationship with the people around him." - Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com
“Memory simply cuts through the problem with clipped efficiency, once more shedding prior expectation for a deeper — and deeply moving — third act that finds two broken sorts piecing themselves together again." - Ben Croll of The Wrap.
"It has a lot on its mind, and not all of it makes sense. But its two leads are so good together, so weirdly right together, that everything slips away and you just watch them." - Bilge Ebiri of Vulture.
Memory cast: Jessica Chastain, Peter Sarsgaard, Merritt Wever, Brooke Timber, Elsie Fisher, Josh Charles and Jessica Harper.
