One of the writers of Pirates of the Caribbean Six has spoken of his surprise that Disney actually purchased his script as it was so "weird".
To date, there have been five Pirates of the Caribbean movies - The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, At World's End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell no Tales.
There is speculation that a sixth movie might be treated as a reboot of sorts. Indeed, there was talk of a female-led sequel with Margot Robbie starring, but that never came to fruition.
Either way, Craig Mazin is just happy that Disney liked the script that was written alongside Ted Elliott, who penned the first four movies in the franchise.
"We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird," Mazin told the LA Times.
"And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
The current writer and actor strike in the United States has led to numerous movie and television productions being put on hold.
Will Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow?
Depp is the leader of the franchise and has starred in every movie in the series so far. But, due to his high-profile divorce case with Amber Heard, it was believed that Disney had dropped him from the role as Jack Sparrow, though Disney Studios Motion Picture president Sean Bailey told the New York Times that the studio were "non-committal" about the actor's return.
As for Depp himself, he wants to give Captain Jack the send-off he deserves.
"My feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye, as it were," he said in 2022.
"A franchise can only last for so long, and there's a way to end a franchise like that, and I thought that the characters deserved to have their way out, to end the franchise on a very good note. I planned on continuing until it was time to stop."
