David Cronenberg has revealed that he has an idea in mind that would suit Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart starring alongside each other again, but admitted there would be difficulties in pulling it off.
Pattinson and Stewart hit global fame in the noughties through the hugely popular Twilight series, with the former playing vampire Edward Cullen and the latter playing Bella Swan.
The romance on-screen started to blossom off it and the pair went into a relationship, though they subsequently separated.
Cronenberg has worked with both actors, with Pattinson on Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars and with Stewart on his recent release, Crimes of the Future.
Both Cronenberg and Stewart were in Cannes to promote and show the film, which also stars Viggo Mortensen and Lea Seydoux.
When asked about his relationship with both Pattinson and Stewart, the director revealed a desire to pair them again on-screen.
“It was Robert who actually introduced me to Kristen," Cronenberg told World of Reel.
"They have developed beautifully, separately, as actors. Making arthouse movies and successfully carrying that off. Kristen and I had a great time and Rob and I had a great time. For me, yeah, I can definitely think of a movie, or idea, that would be great to have them both together.”
Cronenberg did concede that the pair's past relationship, as well as the fact that they are viewed as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan by millions, presents a stumbling block.
“I don’t want to get into it because it wouldn’t be my next movie, however, it might be problematic since fans might expect a certain kind of relationship and that would get in the way of creating new characters for them," he continued.
"So, I have a strange feeling that might be problematic, so it’s only theoretical for now.”
