Well, the large cast makes the first Avengers movie more fun than any of the origin movies so far, but it's still a weird mix of alien demigods (Thor/Loki), people of the past (Capt. America) and modern-day heroes (Tony Stark/Bruce Banner/Black Widow) who also all have their quirks. Sometimes the chemistry is there, but sometimes it doesn't work in terms of humor and dialogues.
I've long wondered what made the Avengers series (and all the Marvel movies around it) so popular, and actually expected it to have a little more tongue-in-cheek humor in it. I found that a bit disappointing. There is some self-mockery in it, but that is mainly due to the cheeky Tony Stark. The other Avengers have little humor, with Captain America as a humorless low. In any case, the film even takes itself a bit too seriously, especially when it comes to the hassle with that Tesseract.
Then there's the bad guy, Loki (from Thor) who makes his appearance again. He is charismatic and is played well by Tom Hiddleston. I still find him the most interesting as a character (such as his jealousy towards Thor), but it is barely developed further.
Unfortunately, the final battle is quite a long one with all those monsters approaching Manhattan through an interdimensional portal. They serve as a simple cannon fodder for the Avengers to show as much spectacle and battle sequences as possible, while I would have preferred a more intimate fight in which Loki is central.
I don't want to know how much money went into all the special effects, because it's all beautifully done. In terms of content, it is all a lot of nonsense, with a lot of pseudo-scientific gibberish and fuss. At 2.5 hours, it is also more than half an hour too long. I wonder if the sequels will blow me away.

“The tesseract has awakened” on Earth and the Chitauri follow their 'leader' Loki [Tom Hiddleston] to Earth in order to claim this unlimited source of energy. Loki hypnotizes Hawkeye [Jeremy Renner], who becomes a major obstacle for the Avengers, who obviously want to prevent Loki from using the Tesseract for his evil purposes. Whedon succeeds wonderfully in giving the many characters enough space to become more than an extra. The subplot with David Banner [Mark Ruffalo] and Natasha Romanoff [Scarlett Johansson] is especially interesting. It's a shame that the finale is just an excuse to destroy a city in spectacular fashion (with excellent special effects). Original is different, for that matter. Next: Avengers: Age of Ultron.
