'All That Heaven Allows' by Douglas Sirk is a film adaptation of a series of novels. The story is therefore completely irrelevant. Above all, it is a colour film. At a time when black and white was just beginning to lose out, Sirk gave the cinematic colour palette an extra boost. Trees, grass, deer, dresses, interiors, everything seems to have had an extra lick of paint. A fifties precursor to 'Blue Velvet', 'American Beauty' and 'The Tree Of Life'.

“Cary, let's face it: you were ready for a love affair, but not for love.”

Great classic. All That Heaven Allows is an old-fashioned romcom/melodrama, and the film shows how it should be done. First of all, the film looks great, and especially the sets are impressive. And the colors splash off the screen. Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman also have a nice chemistry, although I had to get used to the subdued acting of the two. The passion does not radiate, but that also fits the characters and the zeitgeist.

Melodramas are not exactly the type of film that I like. In this All That Heaven Allows everything is presented in an exaggeratedly sweet way. The ending in which Ron regains consciousness after his accident with the deer outside in the background could not be a better example of this. At a certain point I had had enough of all the gossip, because it did not produce many interesting dialogues. Moreover, Ron is far too smooth a type to be a really interesting character. Everything seems 'too neat' and 'too perfect' with him. On the other hand, the film does radiate a certain pleasant atmosphere with the many red colours, which provides a nice contrast with the snowy landscapes.

2*
