Ambitious and very professionally made film that suffers from two deadly flaws: an enormous and mortifying length and a total lack of imaginative (actors in the roles of the) villains. Kevin Costner tries his best, the makers aren't sentimental or disguise the violence and the graphics are beautiful, but the movie just won't come to life for me – plotline, individual scenes, performances, it's just not interesting enough . And that Dennis Quaid accent seems terribly contrived.

Wyatt Earp was a man with a fascinating background. Wild west icon with wild stories and an equally dubious reputation. From a great hero to a man who also mainly cared for his own gain. The film looks at almost the entire life of the man and takes quite a while. Without real cohesion and without real tension. There are scenes that aren't bad per se, but still fall a bit dead and never come into their own. It could have been cut and mounted more firmly. And perhaps even better to focus more on a more specific moment in his life rather than a scrapbook of fragments.

It doesn't get bad per se, but it's not really exciting and uninspired. This could have been much better.

Disappointing.

Kevin Costner's efforts for the genre are admirable, but unfortunately he's not my favorite actor. I find him quite stiff and not very charismatic. Even as Wyatt Earp, he doesn't impress me. In addition, he also ended up in a much too long movie. The entire first hour is a weakly directed piece that dutifully reels in a few episodes, often accompanied by a moral.

By then the 'real' Tombstone story can begin (with a long build-up), you've been watching a bad movie for an hour. To be honest, once that first hour is over, it all gets a little bit better, but it never gets really good. The bond with Doc Holiday, for example, seems to have been lost a bit. Dennis Quaid is also bizarrely bad. He is guilty of a kind of overacting that has no equal. Also, the soundtrack - trumpet blast that many American patriotic WW2 movies would envy - isn't very good (and badly used too).

Not the best version about Wyatt Earp and co. I expected more, but alas.
