Ehmmm, quite bizarre, this piece of cinema . The title already reveals it: the director (Guy Maddin) has made a film about the city where he grew up: Winnipeg. But it is bizarre, it has become a mixture of a documentary with a film in itself. Throughout the film, Maddin talks about all kinds of anecdotes about his Winnipeg. The history of the ice hockey club is discussed, a reenactment of a Nazi invasion and the freezing climate are discussed. A piece of his own family history has also been incorporated to make it personal

Anyway, Maddin rambles on (almost fell asleep), but does so enthusiastically. All of this is backed up with another piece of unadulterated Russian editing running through it. You also see short flashes of intertitles throughout the film, all with stirring images and music. All in all, I think it was a reasonably successful film. Strange, but nice to see .

Visual essay is partly autobiographical, partly fictional and it doesn't really matter where that line lies. The fact is that director Guy Maddin himself was born in Winnipeg, Canada and that he has mixed feelings about his hometown. In this visually overwhelming pseudo-documentary he combines archive footage with acted scenes, but these are also often difficult to tell apart. Maddin tells 'his story' with humor and the video editing makes this an exciting, but exhausting experience. 86-year-old Ann Savage, famous from neo-noir Detour (1945), plays the role of Maddin's mother.

First Maddin. A special, passionate, but somewhat unbalanced film in my opinion. When Maddin lets the atmosphere speak, My Winnipeg is at its best. Gritty black and white images, musing voice-overs and, above all, lots and lots of snow. At times it's nice to dream away, just like the main character, and let the stream of consciousness wash over you.

Unfortunately, the nicer moments are more than once followed by duller scenes in which far too much history is discussed. For example, half an anthology about some ice hockey stadium was only moderately interesting. I understand that it is part of the passion for the city depicted by Maddin, but it was a bit too explanatory/narrative for me. And there are a few such slips that undermine the 'flow' of the film a bit. I thought the reconstructed youth fragments were successful, I would have liked to see a bit more of that.

Mixed success, but definitely worth seeing once. 3*.
