I wasn't impressed with part I and neither was part II.

Of course it is quite funny to see the stereotypical characters in one family of Greek descent. We have also seen (better) the nonsense surrounding the daughter and father/mother in other similar films, so that does not make it very interesting.

Not my kind of comedy this.

After the unexpected cinema success of the original, a sequel was released no less than fourteen years later, and the most positive thing about it is that it has at least become a nice film. Part 1 was a bit unremarkable, and I don't expect to remember much of this one for a while either.

The pace is quite high and they try to throw a lot of jokes at us, but that didn't get me more than a slightly amused smile. This is mainly because the Greeks are portrayed very stereotypically here, it is all just a bit too exaggerated. In fact, this film is not that different from comparable feel-good movies in which full-blooded Americans play the leading roles. In that respect, it is disappointing that leading actress/writer Vardalos has not come up with a sharper/better script. This film will therefore not be the career boost for her and her fellow actors that she might have hoped for. A pity, especially for John Corbett, who still has a pleasant appearance, and for the talented Elena Kampouris, who we will nevertheless encounter more often in larger films.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) distinguished itself by focusing on Greek-American culture and paved the way for other films about families with an immigrant background. In 2016, there is nothing original about the basic concept anymore and Vardalos limits himself to a repetition of moves. An enthusiastic cast tries to make the best of it. Toula [Nia Vardalos] and Ian [John Corbett] get ready for teenage daughter April's [Elena Kampouris] graduation. She still has to decide where she will study and is looking for a suitable date. Inevitably, the entire Greek branch of the family gets involved in the proceedings. Toula's parents Gus [Michael Constantine] and Marie [Lainie Kazan] discover that they never got married due to a formal error, so everyone can prepare for a wedding party. Nothing new under the sun in this pointless repetition. Will receive a sequel in 2023.
