“Rock and roll!”

Stays fun. Arachnophobia always makes me a little paranoid and itchy, and I expected the movie to be more youthful than really good. But I am pleasantly surprised that the film remains an entertaining and even strong horror film. Spiders are not my favorite insects, and especially at the end I felt the shivers run down my body, and I felt something tingly all the time. But also the shower/bathroom scene remains fun. And that is also the greatest strength of Arachnophobia, because horror, suspense and humor come together perfectly. And Jeff Daniels is good, but of course the role of John Goodman remains by far the most fun.

Arachnophobia, a very fitting title. If you didn't already have it, I think this movie could give you arachnophobia. I can't imagine anyone not getting the jitters after watching this movie. Anyway, now I'm not a fan of spiders myself, so this film works very well. Arachnophobia could have gone in different directions; the film could have been a scary horror movie or a campy monster movie in the style of Eight Legged Freaks or Giant Spider Invasion. But director Frank Marshall, best known for his collaborations with Steven Spielberg, chooses the middle ground. Arachnophobia feels very much like Poltergeist; quite creepy at certain moments, but for a large part also very light-hearted because of the characters and comedic get-togethers.

The light-heartedness in Arachnophobia mainly comes from the figures in the small American town. One of those typical farm towns known to us, where Jeff Daniels and his big-city family come to live. Although the film is full of over the top characters, it never gets too much. Not even when comic relief John Goodman - with his own comic theme that sounds when he comes into the picture - comes into the picture nicely rude. Despite these comic scenes, Marshall never loses sight of the 'shudder', he actually knows how to find that balance between horror and humor very well. In that respect, this is a perfect double bill with a movie like Poltergeist, it's great family horror. Arachnophobia is and remains a wonderful film, but I still get the creeps when I think about the film. Kind of like getting itchy when you talk about lice.

4 stars.

Quite a fun movie with a nod to the horror movies of the 50's, cast plays nice and the spiders are well done.
