Wow, this was really good!!!!

Ryan Coogler delivers a very strong performance as a director.

The film was very well put together.

Michael B. Jordan acts at his best, the rest of the cast was also very good.

If you have to find a small negative point, it might be the playing time, which could be a bit shorter.

But this is by far the best movie of 2025! Go see this in theaters!

In the 1930s, the badly damaged Sammie Moore [Miles Caton] shows up at his father's [Saul Williams] church with a seemingly irreparably damaged guitar, who once again points out to Sammie that the guitar is an instrument of the devil. A reconstruction of the 24 hours that preceded this makes it clear that he is not entirely wrong. Michael B. Jordan shines as twin brothers (and Sammie's cousins) Smoke and Stack, who have moved to Mississippi with money that they have obtained in Chicago in a dubious way to open a juke joint (a kind of blues café). Sammie is allowed to perform on the opening night with the experienced pianist and harmonica player Delta Slim [Delroy Lindo]. Many old acquaintances show up and the mood is great. Until the arrival of a white bluegrass trio led by the bloodthirsty vampire Remmick [Jack O'Connell]. Superbly acted satirical horror is a mix of Night Of The Living Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn with a few visual references to The Shining. Coogler holds up a mirror to contemporary American society and leaves no doubt about where his sympathies lie. Coogler's unconventional use of music (and the associated culture) is also impressive, especially in a visual tour de force that takes place while the party is still in full swing. The denouement is disappointing and the epilogue superfluous. Anyone wondering whether Caton can really sing and play guitar should stay seated until after the credits.

Based on the trailers I expected a sultry Mississippi version of 30 Days of Night. But the film goes much deeper than that. Sinners is quite a slow film that manages to set the scene well and focuses on family ties, racism and all sorts of other things that went on in Jim Crow America in the 1930s. I also get huge Idlewild and the Color Purple vibes with Sinners.

This mix does ensure that not everyone will enjoy themselves equally well. The fact that towards the end a 30 days of Night /From Tusk till Dawn sauce is poured over the film is an original bonus.

Visually very nice and special things are done with the music.

For me a very original and fun film, but you have to take into account a long playing time and an exploration of the black community in the 1930s of a racist USA.

If you're going purely for the horror, Sinners is the wrong place for you.
