Brilliant anthology series. Every episode is without a doubt a gem, usually involving crime. You feel like you are watching a movie - a kammerspiel - in half an hour. Superb psychology, dialogues, acting performances by a varied range of actors, and excellent directing by the guest directors. And always original storylines. In fact, usually more original than the average movie storyline (then and now). Of course you have to take in the zeitgeist of the fifties, but this adds to the charm for me. Last but not least, the master of suspense himself always enjoys the intro and outro, in which he shows his typical black British humour. Super!

To the tones of Charles Gounod's playful Marche funèbre d'une marionnette, the silhouette of the Master appears. As an introduction, he addresses the TV audience directly, with dry, British humor, in a somewhat silly tone, sometimes in a laughable situation. Directors in this first season included Hitchcock himself (4x), Robert Stevens and Robert Stevenson. Many famous actors make their appearance: Joseph Cotten, Claude Rains, John Williams, John Cassavetes, Vera Miles, Thelma Ritter and daughter Pat Hitchcock. Those who mainly played secondary roles on the silver screen now play a leading role on the small screen.

They are TV adaptations of crime stories that were mainly published in magazines. Writers are often forgotten Americans, but so are the British Dorothy Sayers. They are cleverly constructed mini thrillers and mysteries. The limited length allows you to watch an episode in one sitting without losing concentration.

It's about ordinary people in an unusual situation. They are often good citizens with financial or marital problems. Sometimes the story is told from the criminal's point of view. Someone is planning the perfect crime, but something goes wrong. In other cases, someone is faced with a threat or mystery. As a viewer you can easily sympathize. There is a successful mix of tension, psychology and humor. The surprising denouements leave you feeling like you could have guessed it.

Favorite episodes: 1, 3, 4, 10, 20, 38.
