It is based on the hugely successful movie of the same name released in 2005 starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. It earned $487m dollars at the box office and was critically well-received.
The success of the movie led to plans for a sequel that never materialised, and writer Simon Kinberg previously explained why.
"The strength of the first movie is it’s a love story; they are, you know, falling back in love with each other or in love for the first time in a genuine way," he told JoBlo.
"And to tell a love story, to serialise a love story is very hard. Because no matter what you do in the second movie, sure, they could be partners and spies and bickering together, but you wouldn’t actually have the arc of two people who are falling in love."
Pitt and Jolie were married between 2014 and 2019.
A television reboot was announced in 2021 with Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the lead roles, but the latter eventually dropped out which led to Erskine stepping in.
The official premise reads:
'John and Jane Smith enter into a new phase of their marriage after agreeing to work as spies for a mysterious agency.'
Mr. and Mrs. Smith boasts a cracking cast as in addition to Glover and Erskine we have Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell and Ursula Corbero.
