A history of Megalopolis
This is a passion project for Coppola as he has been developing Megalopolis for 40 years and has invested a significant amount of his own money into the production.
In the early 2000s, he shot second-unit footage in New York City to prepare for production and even met with actors Russell Crowe, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicolas Cage, Paul Newman, Kevin Spacey, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco and Uma Thurman about potential casting.
However, the 9/11 terrorist attacks made him rethink the project.
"It made it really pretty tough... a movie about the aspiration of utopia with New York as a main character and then all of a sudden you couldn't write about New York without just dealing with what happened and the implications of what happened," he said at the time.
"The world was attacked and I didn't know how to try to do with that. I tried."
