Zoe Saldana hopes to play Lieutenant Uhura one last time alongside her Star Trek pals.
Since 2009, Saldana has starred as Uhura alongside Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock in the Star Trek reboot series. After the first movie, she subsequently appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.
Star Trek (2009) was a critical and commercial success, but the next two movies did not receive as positive a response from fans and critics.
A fourth movie was announced in 2022, with Matt Shakman stepping into the director's chair. However, he would later leave the project to direct a new Fantastic Four movie for Marvel which sent the production into no man's land.
Another Star Trek movie was then announced that will be a standalone prokect away from the previous trilogy, but Saldana still hopes that Star Trek 4 will happen.
"I mean, I heard what you heard in the trades," she told ComicBook.com.
"I just heard they're gearing up to do a new one with a younger, sort of, take on it... I don't know if it's from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round.
"Listen, I know it's a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules. But working with J.J. Abrams, and for J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot, was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So, if I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful."
Pine frustrated with Star Trek 4 development
In an interview with Esquire last year, Pine said that he and his acting colleagues from the previous three movies are all eager to return, but bemoaned the lack of communication that they are provided when it comes to the development of Star Trek 4.
"I would say it’s frustrating," he admitted.
"It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy."
