There aren't much plot details to speak of as of yet, but there will naturally be inspiration taken from the Super Mario video games.
There has, of course, been an adaptation of the video game before with the release of the live action feature, Super Mario Bros. in 1993. It was a commercial and critical failure and it led to Nintendo refusing to allow license to adapt their intellectual properties for a long time.
Fast forward to 2014 and Sony was desperately attempting to acquire the rights, but it was Universal who would eventually partner with Nintendo.
