Colin Farrell says The Penguin TV series is "incredibly violent".
In 2022, the Batman franchise was rebooted with The Batman, with Robert Pattinson starring as Bruce Wayne. Matt Reeves' movie received positive reviews and was a huge commercial success, too.
Alongside Pattinson were Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as The Riddler.
Farrell's performance proved so popular that, not long after the movie's release, a television series based on the character of Penguin was announced. And, it seems like the series will lead up to the events of The Batman 2.
At the conclusion of The Batman, Oswald 'Oz' Cobblepot is poised to take over the crime syndicate previously led by Carmine Falcone, so the series will focus on his emergence as a new crime lord.
The Penguin isn't going to shy away from the violence that comes with crime and mafia projects.
"It's dark, that's what I can tell you about it. It's really dark. It's really heavy, I think - it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn't have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It's incredibly violent," Farrell told MovieZine.
"It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting which is a certain power or social status. The death of Carmine Falcone at the end of (The Batman) the film, leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled and so there are various people that are grabbing for that power and this is Oswald’s journey trying to rise to the top through extraordinary obstacles."
Deadline previously reported that the series would be akin to Scarface, as Penguin's ascendancy is akin to that of Tony Montana.
