HBO's The Last of Us has proved video game adaptations can actually be critically acclaimed.
Over the last 30 years, dozens of high-profile video games have been adapted into theatrical releases, including Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Sonic, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, WarCraft, Uncharted and many, many more.
For the most part, video adaptations have not been critically well received, while several have been panned.
The tide could be turning, though, as HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us has emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows in history. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the series has received hugely positive reviews for its acting, writing, themes and its faithfulness to the source material.
And, video game fan Jack Black believes another could be even more successful if someone wants to adapt Red Dead Redemption 2, the acclaimed western.
"I'm a fan of adaptations, when done right," he told the BBC while promoting The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
"The Last of Us was fantastic. And what's crazy is how loyal it is to the original source material. It's basically all from the game with just a couple of tweaks. It's going to win all the awards.
"They used the video game almost like a storyboard and I was like, 'Whoa, this looks just the same.'
"And there are some great games that have yet to be explored in television or film. Maybe there's going to be a Red Dead Redemption movie? There should be, because I think that just as good or even better story than The Last of Us."
