Tom Cruise is currently basking in the glory of the most successful movie of his career so far, Top Gun: Maverick.
The sequel to Top Gun has been released to critical and commercial acclaim and, at the time of writing, has grossed an astonishing $1.187 billion.
Cruise arguably remains the biggest movie star on the planet, and although he has received acclaim for roles in movies like Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, An Interview With a Vampire, A Few Good Men, Magnolia and Collateral, over the last decade or so he has focused on big action epics like in the massively successful Mission: Impossible series.
One person who isn't impressed by his success is Mickey Rourke, who believes Cruise's status at the top of Hollywood is irrelevant.
What did Mickey Rourke say about Tom Cruise?
“That doesn’t mean shit to me. The guy’s been doing the same effing part for 35 years. I got no respect for that," he said in an interview with Piers Morgan.
“I don’t care about money and power. I care about when I watch Al Pacino work and Chris Walken and Robert De Niro’s early work and Richard Harris’ work and Ray Winstone’s work.
"That’s the kind of actor I want to be like. Monty Clift and Brando back in the day.
“I think he is irrelevant, in my world.”
In 1991, after initially breaking through into Hollywood, Rourke made the decision to return to a career in Boxing, having previously boxed prior to acting.
Over the 1990s and into the early 200s, he was largely sidelined in Hollywood when it came to leading men roles as he was often cast as a supporting player, albeit in some well-known movies like Man on Fire and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
In 2005, he made a true return to the mainstream with Sin City.
But, in terms of acclaim, the best moment of his career was yet to come and it eventually came via Darren Aronofsky hit, The Wrestler.
