Lily Gladstone has warned Native Americans only to watch Killers of the Flower Moon if they are ready due to the subject matter.
The new historical drama is directed by Martin Scorsese and features an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons and John Lithgow.
It is based on the non-fiction novel 'Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI' written by David Grann.
The official premise reads:
'Members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major BOI investigation directed by a 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White, described by Grann as "an old-style lawman."'
The portrayal of tribe murders will undoubtedly be a difficult watch for those with Native American heritage of all generations, which is why Gladstone has urged those to view it with care.
"The most pressing thing I've wanted to say about Killers of the Flower Moon, especially to Native Women & Youth: See it when and only if you feel ready, and see it with people you feel safe with," she wrote on X. "You'll likely have a lot of generational grief to process. You're not alone.
"Never forget this story is recent history with a lasting impact on breathing, feeling people today. It belongs to them, & we all have so much to learn from it.
"In this process of learning about the horrific Reign of Terror, remember that the Osage remain. Native People remain. And this story is a lot to take in. Be kind, and please be gentle with each other. There is much to process, and much to heal."
Killers of the Flower Moon currently holds a 3.8 rating out of five on MovieMeter.
