James Gunn has confirmed three stars who will definitely be returning in the DC Universe as their current characters.
Following a string of commercial and critical failures, Warner Bros. made the decision to scrap the majority of DC Studios' future projects and appointed Gunn as the head of creative at an executive level to spearhead a new DC Universe.
One of the first decisions Gunn made was to inform Henry Cavill that he would not be returning as Superman despite his cameo in Black Adam and the subsequent announcement that he would portray The Man of Steel in future DC projects.
DC are starting with a clean slate, and that means new actors will be cast for plenty of significant roles like Batman and Superman, with David Corenswet already confirmed as playing the latter.
Three names who WILL return, though, are John Cena as Peacemaker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle.
This doesn't mean that no other previous actors will return, but that is the list Gunn has provided for the moment.
As for when the DCU will actually commence, Gunn informed that nothing is "canon" until animated series Creature Commandos.
“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year — a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that," he replied to a question on Threads.
"It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.
“And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”
Gunn is writing and directing Superman: Legacy himself which will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in addition to Corenswet as Superman.
