Great crime film (Melville's best so far for me) with great acting, great dialogue, a twisting story, with a superbly filmed robbery of a cash transport. This is what a gangster film should be. The police also use unorthodox techniques to catch the crooks and force them to confess. Plus you get Lino Ventura in one of his best roles. What a character actor.
The only downside was when gangster Gu orders the commissioner "at gunpoint" to publicly confess the corrupt interrogation methods: well, if a gangster who kills a cop in the movie lectures another cop a lesson about justice, then I find that a bit out of place in this movie. That's why it didn't quite get a full 5.

It took me quite a while to understand how it all worked: new characters all the time, the connection of which was not immediately clear to me. But gradually it developed into a great film. Perhaps it could have had a shorter introductory phase.

I'm more charmed by the three "gangster films" after this, also because they are a bit more compact, and the use of color contributes enormously to the overall atmosphere.

Great gangster film, the kind that inspired Scorsese and Tarantino. The characters are well-depicted - with an unforgettable Lino Ventura at the forefront - and are based on historical characters/criminals from around the 1930s and '40s. The plot initially required some effort to follow it properly. But once the characters and their mutual relationships were more or less known, it went smoothly. The crime story is well constructed and the events follow each other well. It is still a hard and cynical film, more than what came out of Hollywood at the time, although it was also evolving there at that time. It can of course hardly be a warm-hearted film given the subject. For me, this came along at an appropriate time and I can therefore appreciate it very much. Melville is a good storyteller with the camera.
