"The gates of hell are unlocked."

The year is 2010. A man is shipwrecked and washes ashore on an island. The islanders turn out to be strange guys, a kind of great apes. Not as bad as is all said above. Of course the film has many snags, but Brando is a joy to watch, even if he doesn't try very hard.

2.5*

Exceptionally strange film, but at the same time it is very intriguing. Maybe I'm too much of a fan of people with sometimes hilarious, but sometimes rock-solid monster makeup to be influenced too much by things like overacting or a complete lack of a coherent script, because entertaining The Island Of Dr. Moreau particularly good.

The fact that Val Kilmer and Frankenheimer apparently hated each other makes all the scenes in which Kilmer is in the picture extra interesting, because I didn't immediately get the idea that his performance was influenced by it. It's just strange that Thewlis isn't listed as one of the main actors on the poster, because he has significantly the largest role and actually does it very well. Fairuza Balk also intrigues with her role, because she has her exotic appearance in any case and puts down a fairly intense role. Brando is... Brando, with a weird undertone. The most strange thing for me was to find out that Mark Dacascos also walks around as a beast, he didn't do too bad even within this thankless role.

For the rest, the script is a strange concatenation of metaphorical dialogues and pseudo-philosophical inserts. I'll just assume that the book itself is better developed, because the division between unconsciously humorous and unashamed float was very small here. Furthermore, at times exciting or gruesome, but also not scary enough to be called a really hard horror film. Sometimes intriguing in approach, but nowhere worked out in such a way that we can talk about good sci-fi. It wasn't funny either, for that the wink was missing, but somehow it was all hilarious in the elaboration.

It's definitely not a good movie, but I still had a lot of fun. Have seen a lot of worse movies than this, proves once again that such a flop 100 is, as always, very subjective.
