Ask any movie buff to name one crime thriller from the 1960s, and there's a good chance the following titles will be featured; Bullitt (1968), Point Blank (1967) or Coogan's Bluff (1968). A missing title is Warning Shot, a serious effort in this genre.

David Jansen (known from the Fugitive series) plays Tom Valens, an LAPD officer who, together with his partner, keeps a lookout at a housing complex. They are there because the city is infested by a "psycho killer", and most likely his next victim will fall here. When suddenly a suspicious person walks out of a house, Tom tries to stop him. And if this person also pulls out a gun, there is no other option than to shoot him.

The problem is that the weapon that was drawn has suddenly disappeared, and the man shot is a doctor who was esteemed by the whole community. With the public verdict ("GUILTY") already known, it is up to Tom to prove that there was indeed a gun, and that the good doctor was not completely clean.

Warning Shot is a very entertaining b-thriller that takes itself very seriously, with David Jansen as a clear example. That man really doesn't show an ounce of emotion, or humor, but strangely enough, this works. There is also a nice supporting cast in this film (a young Joan Collins, and a very good George Grizzard), and the film contains enough hipness to be pleasant to watch for the seasoned 60s fan. Oh, and Jerry Goldsmith's music isn't bad either!
