This is of course a bit reminiscent of The Great Escape. The difference lies in the fact that these are not prisoners of war, but Jews. Escape From Sobibor is a fairly entertaining film that only becomes impressive when the persecution of the Jews comes directly into the picture. The escape itself is portrayed in a fun and adventurous way, but is dwarfed by the aforementioned The Great Escape. This is mainly because the escape itself is no more than that everyone runs out of the gate for themselves. There are no real highlights. The acting is nothing more than nice and better films have been made on the subject in the end. The highlight for me is the German officer who, despite firing at a crowd, finds it necessary to aim.

It's been a while since I've seen this Escape from Sobibor, from my childhood I think. He's never completely left my mind and that's saying something. TV movie or not, this is another very raw realistic movie about the holocaust with all its horrors that go with it. Few really gruesome scenes, certainly with what we are used to on film today, but no less impressive for that. The camera always turns away at the right moment like the dog that wanted to tear the child...

The film has enough poignant moments to be very haunting. The escape is the highlight anyway and although you know that the break will be successful, I still find it very exciting. Everything revolves around coincidence and details and no matter how much you plan in advance, there are always unforeseen circumstances. Another very strong moment of the film was the scene where 13 men who had previously attempted an escape had to identify 13 other fellow sufferers to be shot with.

The cast is nothing special, but Hauer is excellently cast as a Russian lieutenant. His accolade is therefore deserved. The film is quite long - I saw the version of almost 2.5 hours - but I never got bored. It remains unbelievable how ruined the Nazi machine was oiled and organized when a new transport arrived. Quite bizarre also - of course with the current foreknowledge - how future victims were “naive” or gullible about the alleged fate that awaited them.

A strong film in any case, still, even after 32 years. A respectful film in honor of the many victims. Just a pity about the English and even more so the English accent.

Revisit this movie after many years. Although there is much to criticize, it is still an impressive film to watch. Especially after reading a number of books about the uprising and the camp.

The acting is very mediocre, I can't really think of an actor who can reach his or her level. Furthermore, the decoration of the camp is also heavily substandard. You can see that the creators didn't have a big budget at their disposal.

Still, there are a number of individual scenes that impress. I am thinking especially of the scene with the mother and the baby being shot and also the scene in which the thirteen people who tried to escape have to take thirteen others to their deaths.

The preparation and the actual escape are shown as best as possible and give an indication of how it would have gone. Yet you also see some SS men and Ukrainian guards bumbling as if they were novices.

However, I would recommend everyone to see this film. Although there is enough to criticize, it is impressive enough to spend 2.5 hours of your life on this.
