Close Encounters of the Third Kind plot
"We are not alone."
Roy Neary has a "close encounter" with an alien spaceship. The US government finds out that the aliens will land in a certain spot and makes up a cover story to keep the public at bay. However, a group of people, including Neary, have a vision of the exact spot and set out to find it.

Just saw the 40th anniversary in the cinema. Spielberg really is such a director who manages to make something completely unbelievable believable with just image and sound. To suck the viewer's art into a film, turning fiction into reality. The longer you look, the more believable everything becomes; it's about the big picture and all the scenes, however useless they seem at first glance, contribute to this. Good montages and stunning effects for the time complete this film. One of the must-see classics.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind didn't appeal to me that much. Unlike many others, I found the ending extremely boring. In the last half hour hardly anything is said and you just sit there looking at lights and listening to music tones. That being said, I just have to admit that I'm more fascinated by ET. More drama too and a nicer movie. Finer characters, as the main character is a bit of a madman here. His behavior is not worked out enough and he himself as a person is not that bad either. But yeah, I thought it was all pretty okay until the end. What a boring mess.
Difficult to quote because of that, so I will weigh an average through fractions of the playing time.
The film consists of 9x fifteen minutes so 2 x 2.5* (beginning) + 5 x 3.5* (middle part) + 2x 1.0* (end) and dividing this by 9 quarters gives us a nice 2.72* or rounded 2.5*.

Revised on Blu-ray, in the director's cut. This is the longest of the three versions available, especially worth checking out due to the addition of two long scenes (a press conference and the scene where Richard Dreyfuss destroys his entire garden) that are missing from the special edition. The scene at the end, in which he enters the mothership, is missing here, but that's not a big loss, since that scene adds nothing anyway. Rather the opposite. This continues to be a great SF movie, with one unforgettable scene after another. Dreyfuss is perfect in the lead role and obsolescence of the special effects is cleverly prevented by an ingenious use of lighting effects, which largely hide the actual spaceships. One of Mr Spielberg's best films.
