I would like to call him avoir du respect 'director of the atmosphere'. Robert Altman you get here in optimal form. A self-proclaimed "anti-western". A wry, muffled tragedy starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie as the romantic fools. He the gambler, she the brothel madam. The photography of Vilmos Zsigmond is delicate and distinguished, but above all terribly beautiful. Many see Nashville as the lewd ultimate Altman movie. I'm hooked on this humble homage to the (classic) western:

Robert Altman movies are always worth looking back at. His first truly successful film is the anti-western 'McCabe And Mrs. Miller', produced by lead actor Warren Beatty. Not a heroic cowboy adventure, but an image of a rather desolate society where prostitution, drug use, corruption and the power of big money reign. The final scene is masterful in all its contrariness. The people of the town are too busy to pay attention to the final shootout, which also doesn't overflow with heroism with shots in the back and a lonely ending of the protagonist in a thick pile of snow.[/spoiler ] The twentieth century has already far overtaken the time of the pioneers.

70s Western.
While I recently saw few untypical Western things in Johnny Guitar, it was different in this film. It's a film that relies a little more on drama and whose characters are less stereotypical. Altman is also a slightly better narrator than most Western directors.
On the other hand, the 70s look is a complete eyesore and the soundtrack is also not good. I think it must have been expensive, because every free 5 seconds such a song is used, sometimes it just fades away. Those are choices that I really don't understand at all.
The plot still holds the attention, Beatty also does a good job by the way. It's not enough to make a good movie out of it, it's way too far from everything that fascinates me in cinema, but it's certainly not the worst western I've seen either.
