Deliverance plot

"What did happen on the Cahulawassee River?"

In the Appalachians, a dam is being built in the hopes of curbing the raging Cahulawassee River. Four men from the city therefore want to sail down the rough river by canoe. The expedition's leader is Lewis Medlock, who sets out to prove his philosophy of individual survival after an inevitable fall of our civilization. Ed Gentrey, on the other hand, is a real family father, who lives comfortably anchored in a daily routine but has an unspoken need for adventure. He has brought two of his friends with him: the jovial bachelor Bobby and the sociable Drew. The first day passes without incident.

“Sometimes you have to lose yourself 'fore you can find anything.”

Rock solid classic about four friends who decide to go into nature and brave a rough river in a canoe. men vs. nature, and the four men from the big city discover the hard way during their trip that different laws apply here. Especially when they meet two hillbillies.

Deliverance is a film about getting to know yourself under difficult circumstances, survival, guilt, forgiveness and penance. The cinematography is superb, especially the scenes around the river and the canoeing. The film has its tense moments and here too director Boorman manages to impress. With actors like Voight, Reynolds, Cox and Beatty who know how to take you on a pleasant trip from the start, which turns into a nightmare. Literal.

Classic! Not only because of the structure, the details such as the backwardness and poverty of the locals, and the acting, but also how, for example, the exhaustion of a rock clambers up hallucinatingly mixes with the environment. That one still stands out to me most as a scene to frame.

Review and still a brilliant adventure film. Four acquaintances decide to sail down a wild river in a canoe, before the power disappears during the construction of a dam. The ecological message is quite thick from the start. Civilization and modernism are advancing at the expense of untouched nature. Still a hot topic today.

The river dwellers all look like the result of extensive inbreeding, a bit of an exaggeration of the backwoods though. The article that Donkerwoud posted takes a closer look at Southern Gothic.

The life of the foursome will take a strange turn when they bump into two locals.... this remains a rough scene... Beautiful images, a palpable tension and hopelessness are nicely compressed in Deliverance. The author of this work, James Dickey, also plays the role of the sheriff here.
