The Hateful Eight plot

"No one comes up here without a damn good reason."

Wyoming, several years after the American Civil War. Bounty hunter John Ruth and a fugitive named Daisy Domergue are on their way to a village called Red Rock to bring her to justice. Along the way, they encounter two men, ex-major and notorious bounty hunter Marquis Warren and Chris Mannix, a southerner who claims to be the village's new sheriff. Due to a severe snowstorm, they are forced to take shelter in 'Minnie's Haberdashery', a stopover located on a mountain pass.

Then again that fails. Morricone's music, a big carriage, a couple of bounty hunters in the snow, a devilish cutie being treated roughly and more mysterious scum in Minnie's Haberdashery. I was looking forward to it, but it soon gets bogged down in repetitive and endless western barking back and forth. With Russell leading the way. Jackson handles something like this a lot better while Goggins is still warming up. Finally arrived at the hut, the rest do not score either, although Bruce Dern doesn't have to say anything to impress. Roth tries his best in a part that probably wasn't meant for him directly.

It does have some nice moments, but they smother in all the grumbling and feeding information about this mess. Because that's how flashy it is. And then suddenly there's The Bounty Hunter who takes on The Confederate. The fuse in the powder keg. The inn suddenly becomes more and more a tomb. Maybe not as exciting as the first chapter of Inglourious Basterds, but I feel like it's that level again. In any case, I looked at the bloody residue with a big grin. Even Zoë Bell couldn't screw up. Leave it at home next time, Q. Along with Madsen..

This movie feels a bit like a date with a gorgeous chick. You've heard stories that she's really nice, has nice parents and not too many ex-boyfriends or a bad image. She walks in and you immediately think, wow! What a woman. She starts talking and you still think, nice, this is going to be a nice evening. She talks a bit about the small things, and after 5 minutes you try to intervene. It will not work. She just keeps on talking and it doesn't stop.

It's not like she's having really stupid conversations, it's not like she's talking about clapping for the pilot during landing or throwing pineapple on her pizza. No turn offs. But it is so much. And so much nonsense. Your thoughts are already wandering and you are already absorbing the environment a bit more. You realize you're in a nice pub and the music is super chill. The servant walks by and you check it out. What a beautiful figure she has! Meanwhile, your date goes on and on. Once the bill arrives you decide to pay, it wasn't a really bad date, but it just wasn't your type. You decide to secretly put your 06 on the receipt and you hope that chick from the service sends you a message.

The Hateful Eight is in fact a very long play, in the form of a movie. That's what the film's greatest charm is; everything largely takes place in one and the same location, namely Minnie's 'tavern' surrounded by a wild and icy beautiful winter landscape. Beautiful snow images in the first hour, and perfect atmosphere creation throughout the film. The typical Tarantino elements are again fully noticeable here, and luckily. Long dialogues and monologues and actors who are given all the space they need to have fun, great tension build-up, here reinforced by mystery and paranoia, and finally at the end a sudden explosion of bloody and over the top violence.
Purely superficially viewed it is not all that special, but that atmosphere creation and tension build-up lift the simple plot to a higher level.
There are of course also downsides; in general the film runs a bit too long (although this is largely functional for the tension and atmosphere) and not every character or actor gets their moment, which in itself was possible since the cast was not terribly large. The whole flashback to the perspective of events from the bad guy gang's viewpoint was also a bit less helpful.
In general, however, this is just a very strong film in which Tarantino does his own thing for 2.5 hours; top notch atmosphere, wonderful dialogues and a very strong Jackson and Russel (among others), all accompanied by appropriate music by Morricone.
